Free space after deleting files and directories

When I delete (I use Shift+Delete) files and/or folders, the resulting free space is less than I would expect after checking the size of deleted data before the operation. It happened to me several times that when I delete e.g. 500 MB of data, Servant reports only e.g. 200 MB more of free space. And then suddenly once in few weeks, the free space increases dramatically after computer restart. Is Servant responsible for this or is there something in Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2 that causes this unpleasant behaviour?

Please, try to compare what free space reports the Windows Explorer and compare it with Servant Salamander after deleting. What you observe is not because of SS, but some another SW.

This can be caused by the System Restore Service. If often stores large logs in the System Volume Information directories.

Thank you very much for your tip - it is exactly what I have been searching for so long. I turned off System Restore on my data drive and the corresponding free space immediately increased by 1.2GB! I am not sure if I really need this service even for the system drive, but I am happy to know how to increase free space. Thanks a lot again :D
