File Icons dont show

I started using Altap Salamander on a Vista Business 32bit system. Quite often, after start of AS, I only get simple icons. When I run Reread Associations the propper icons show up.

I do not always get simple icons only. Sometimes some document types show correctly from the beginning, sometimes even all (that is, I did not miss any).

Does anyone experience the same?

Does anyone have any clue as to what is happening and how to fix it?

Remark: I did not install Salamander's shell extension. Is there some connection? What does the shell extension do anyway? According to this post there's no connection.

Software installed: MS Office 2007, MS Dynamics NAV
no AV, no Firewall (other than Vista's integrated stuff)

I'm not using Vista yet, so I have no experience with it. I just want to confirm that our shell extension (salamext.dll) is just a copy hook (simple purpose: get target path to unpack from archives and copy/move operations from plugin FS) and should not affect getting of file icons from system.

You can try to run salamand.exe from SDK with Trace Server, it should display more error messages.

Download SDK from: http://www.altap.cz/download.html#sal25sdk

Unpack it to C:\AS_SDK. And just copy C:\AS_SDK\exe\salamand.exe and C:\AS_SDK\exe\salrtlp.dll to the Altap Salamander 2.5 installation directory (backup original salamand.exe file first). Then start C:\AS_SDK\tserver\tserver.exe, and then start Salamander. It should display messages to Trace Server. Read C:\AS_SDK\doc\trace_server.txt for details.

See my post http://forum.altap.cz/viewtopic.php?p=10008#10008 - the first P.S.
It started with the icons, than - worse and worse....
Finally I fixed the strange Vista behaviour and afterwards - no problems with AS or icons mapping. The stupid method of my fixing of Vista was described already (see the link above). Until now I don't know what the hell was that.
P.S. Vista Ultimate, Office 2007 and so on......

I'm on Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit and no problem here.

Please try the mentioned Trace Server and Salamander from SDK and let us know (you can export messages from Trace Server).

If you are able to reproduce this problem, we will try to find the reason and fix it.

The Report is very short, and I can't imagine in what way it could help anybody to find a problem.
What you can see on the log is startup of AS with some document type icons missing. Then I switched away to the trace server and back to AS 3 times. then i performed Commands | Reread Associations, which fixed the problem for this instance of AS.

It's no problem to reproduce. I'm very lucky if I don't find any missing Icons before I reloaded them.

BTW: Drive D: is a second traditional NTFS partition on an internal SATA drive, the first partition beeing the system drive C:

There shold be a propper error message if an attachment cannot be added for some reason. Tried to add the log file without zipping first. Did not get any positive or negative confirmation and no sign of the attachment having been added which made me look for some additional information which finally led me to "Allowd Extensions and Sizes". Do you consider text and log files dangerous or harmful in any way?

Thanks for sending this log. It really does not contain anything interesting except the missing error messages. It means that system returns bad icons without signaling error, so Salamander cannot find out that it should read these icons again (to correct them).

If someone else has the same problem, please let us know. I just want to know if this is problem of one Vista installation or general problem.

You're right, sometimes even things that are missing are interesting.

Too bad I seem to be the only one having this problem and there seems to be no easy way to troubleshoot this.

I now found another interresting fact which probably is related to this: I started to experiment with SpreadsheetML files. It's an XML application which was defined by Microsoft and usually handled by Excel. The file has an extension of .xml, but Windows Explorer shows a variation of the Excel document symbol.

On that vista machine, Salamander refuses to display this alternate icon and just displays the ordinary xml icon (even after rereading associations). So, obvious salamander either does not propperly utilize the associated icon handles shell extension.

On that machine, Office 2007 is installed.

In my notebook (Win XP SP2, Office 2003) Salamander handles the icon correctly.
