Changing Drive Attribute ReadOnly-> Full Access->Bum
Changing Drive Attribute ReadOnly-> Full Access->Bum
NOTE 2006-03-31: SOLVED - NOT A SALAMANDER ISSUE
Hi, using Salamder 2.5 Beta 11 and changing the drive attributes from readonly to full access (if you don't have a SAN, same problem with USB sticks occur):
* Salamander does not recognize that he can now write, copy or move
* Salamander closes without any message
Not really a great problem (may occur seldom) but not very convenient for me...

Hello,
OS: Windows XP SP2 and Windows XP Professional SP2
Easiest way to reproduce (with USB stick):
* set USB stick to read only
* stick it in
* start salamander
* go to a directory on the usb stick
* try to move a file to your harddrive
* message "read only"
* switch USB stick to read-write (leave it in your pc, stay with salamander on the USB directory)
* salamander immediately exits
This also happen with an storage area network: displaying a directory on an read-only drive with salamander, changing the drive attributes to read-write and salamander immediately exits.
Hey, this is really not important, switching to another dir, changing drive attributes and then come back - everything is fine.

Could you reproduce this problem from another computer? Or with another USB stick?
I suppose the Servant Salamander is not installed on your USB stick / SAN drive?
We are not able to test this issue because we have not access to USB stick with read-only switch.
Btw, how do you set the USB stick to read-only mode? Using some hardware switch? Or some additional drivers?

Ok, seems to be a problem of filesystem on the USB stick:
If it contains an ext2 filesystem then the problem occurs, for any combination of NTFS and FAT32 (I tested some) there is no problem.
Then I tested the behavior on changing drive attributes of the SAN and Salamander only has the problem IF THE USB STICK IS STICKED IN (sorry, I did not mentioned that, normally the USB stick is in if I work on a PC).
Finally I converted my ext2 partition to ntfs - and the problem disappeared: For the USB stick and for the SAN!
Looks weird to me, I did not mount the ext2...
IT'S DEFINETILY NOT A PROBLEM OF SALAMANDER!
Thanks a lot for your help. Great product, great service!

You mention the point I did not understand: The ext2 partition on the usb stick was never mounted, no driver was installed, it had no drive assigned and did not show up either in "My Computer" nor in any drive list of any programm...
You could only see it in the drive management (Datenträgerverwaltung) of the system administration (Computerverwaltung).
I really do not understand what was happening there.
Nevertheless there's another hidden partition on nearly every system at my work, it contains the system backup data. It makes - as far as I can proove it now - no problems. And at home there's a hidden truecrypt encryptet partition which also makes no problem.
As far as I can observe this, it's the ext2 fs under windows.

I don't understand. Is it a different USB stick?GuidoR13 wrote:You mention the point I did not understand: The ext2 partition on the usb stick was never mounted, no driver was installed, it had no drive assigned and did not show up either in "My Computer" nor in any drive list of any programm...
Or more partitions on one USB stick (I have no idea if this is possible)?
