converting filenames from utf8 to iso8859-1 ??

We have a partition coming from a samba-fat-filesystem (linux). There are several thousand files with German names containing the German Umlaute (äöüßÄÖÜ). These special characters are now - under a MS SBS Server 2003 - seen in corrupted form, eg. 03_05_27--KÃ¼nd.PrÃ¼fungsverb.doc
instead of 03_05_27--Künd.Prüfungsverb.doc

Each file e.g a pdf or word.doc-file can be opened and used without any problems, their content show the German Umlaute, but their names are corrupted.

Servant Salamder contains 2 possible waqys to achieve this. 1: Files -> Convert -> convert or 2) Plugins - Rename - Batch rename
I think, it should be able to convert utf8 back to iso8859-1, but it isn't ? Or what? Could you please help? The codepage850 to iso8859-1 doesn't work ..

My attempts always end with the error: unable to rename file.
Must I use regular expressions - How to achieve a recursive batch renaming for our folders ??

The file should read 03_05_27--KÃ¼nd.PrÃ¼fungsverb (may be this here is once again shown in a different way, when i post it on the board)

Files -> Convert changes a file's content, not its name.

With Batch Renamer you can accomplish your job. Each special character got replaced by two ore more consecutive characters. Just replace those back to its original one original character at a time.

However, I'd recommend to create a listing of all files using the dir command:

dir /b /s

then use perl, awk, sed or a good editor to create a batch file to do the renames; or create a script or program which does the renames based on dir's output as it's input.

Thank you for writing me.
I know that the batch renamer should do this job,
and I tried it before I asked this board for help.
I even achieved a conversion for the Umlaute "ü" and "ä",
BUT:
the German ß and the German Ö are BOTH shown with the same "misinterpreted" 2 characters
(something like "§%")
... and the Batch renamer gives me the error:
" ...error: unable to rename file"

Would You recommend me to do use the "regular expression" feature ?
(Could you explain this then ?)
Or wouldn't it help anyway , as regex is just another way of selecting the files in here ?

I appreciate any comment or hint how to solve this problem.
Maybe it is easier to start a live-linux-distro, remount the partition as writable, install a linux-conv-tool if needed and try it this way ...

But I thought Servant Salamnader is capable to do it ..
Any ideas ?
